Lac Rose is a large 3 km² lagoon, shallow, surrounded by dunes and located a few hundred

   meters from the Atlantic Ocean, 35 km northeast of Dakar.

Officially called RETBA, but better known under the name of Lac Rose since a microscopic algae gives it, depending on the hours and the brightness of the sky, a superb blood tint.

The pinkish, and sometimes even purple, tint of the water in Lake Retba therefore depends on the amount of sunlight and the salt concentration. When the weather is cloudy, the place may have a completely normal color.
