The island of Gorée or Gorée is both an island in the North Atlantic Ocean located in the bay of Dakar and one of the 19 districts of the capital.
The architecture of this small island in the bay of Dakar is characterized by the contrast between the dark quarters of the slaves and the tall red ocher houses lined with cacti and bougainvillea of the merchants.
It is a symbolic place of the memory of the slave trade in Africa, officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 1978: Gorée, “memory island” of this tragedy, was thus one of the very first places to be included on the World Heritage List managed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
